Plot Synopsis
Nick and Gianca are two Italian musicians who meet by chance on a train to Perugia, where they are to attend a jazz workshop. Both in their twenties they share the dream of starting a jazz band of their own Gianca plays the saxophone and is trying to live up to the expectations of a father who abandoned his own artistic aspirations to become a successful accountant. Nick dedicates himself to his trumpet as a way of blocking out an emotionally arid family situation. Nick and Gianca start the Joy Spring Quintet but the group spotlights Nick's natural talent and reveals Gianca's mediocre artistic ability. Facing up to the fact that his passion for music cannot make up for his mediocre talent, Gianca ultimately gives up his artistic ambitions and follows his father's footsteps as an accountant. He starts a family with Francesca. The gifted Nick becomes a world famous trumpet player and this rapidly takes him away from Bologna, his friends, his girlfriend, Gilberta, and his daughter. Nine years later the two men are brought together again at a concert that Nick is giving in Bologna. Gianca is in the audience. He feels troubled and at the same time emotional, as a piece Nick plays is one Gianca wrote with and for his friends, at a time when life held no expectations. Now the song has become a hit. The title is "When Do The Girls Show Up?"
